Mothers Day Fund Raising Dinner
The KCO Women's Forum wishes to extend an invitation to all to this year's Mother's Day and Scholarship Fund Raising Dinner that will be held on Saturday May 9, 2009 at the Radisson Hotel Toronto East.
The Scholarship Fund Raising Dinner is now an annual KCO calendar event organized by the KCO Women's Forum on the eve on Mothers Day to raise money to support the Scholarship Fund. This year, KCO aims to raise more money so as to award more scholarships than last year. In addition there will be a number of entertainment events planned by our youth, including a fashion show, a dancing show and other activities.
There are also opportunities to advertise on the event's program for a nominal fee of $75 for a full page, $50 for half a page, $35 for quarter of a page and $25 for business cards.
KCOWF welcomes donations towards the fund if you or anybody you know is unable to attend the function, but would like to support the fund initiative.

News about Kenyans in the Diaspora
Matunda Nyanchama delivered a speech on November 29, 2006 to the African Peoples Association (APA), at Bowling Green State University, OH. Here is the speech:
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up;
It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up;
It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle;
When the sun comes up, you’d better start running.
It seems to me that Africa has been running for many years and the rest of the world has been feasting on the continent’s challenges. Africa must run faster and turn tables around to ensure it gets it rightful place on this earth.
The subject of Africa’s economic future is broad; I doubt anyone can do proper justice to it in the one hour we have here today.
What I hope I can accomplish is to paint for you a picture of the reality that exists on the ground and the pointers to the continent’s future. It is the story of a glass being half-full rather than half-empty!
Africa’s future is a hopeful one!

Updates from the Board
Dear Members,
I just wanted to give you an update that KCO delegation had a very fruitful meeting with the office of the Canadian Minister for Foreign Affairs in Ottawa on March 11th, 2008. The meeting touched mainly on the political situation in Kenya with a focus on the Canadian government to consider tapping into the resources within the Kenyan Community here in Canada. A quick overview is as follows:
Introduction:
Background & Purpose of the Meeting:
- Kenya Political Situation
Resources within the Kenyan Community in Canada:
- Professionals
- Volunteers
- KCO
Building Kenya through Civic Engagement:
- Civic Engagement Matters
- Respect for Unique Kenyan tribal communities
Open Discussion on the Way Forward:
- Discussions and Suggestions
- Working relationship with KCO
Some of the key areas identified that continue to require immediate attention even as Kenya goes through that process of being rebuilt.
- Resettlement of the displaced persons
- Small Businesses (Jua Kali)
- Housing
- Schools
- Safety & Security
- Rebuilding
- Cities & Towns that were affected by the crisis
As far as the format of the presentation went, the KCO delegation split the presentation into four parts; the first three being presented by three individuals and the last one being a general discussion & suggestions on the "Way forward ". The meeting went very well.
I would like to thank those who volunteered to be part of that delegation as well as those who shared their thoughts following my call for members to be engaged in this activity.
Thanks,
Ben Ondoro – President, Kenyan Community in Ontario
